Outdoor Activities
In Cambodia there are many people who have been disabled due to landmines. These people receive support in the form of an artificial limb and training in the use of it. Sometimes they can even work after rehabilitation. During our teaching unit about "our senses" and "disabilities" we visited the local center of Handicap International with our advanced and intermediate children in October 2009. Handicap International works in more than 60 countries on 250 different projects, supporting people with disabilities. We were given a tour through the center by Mr. Meas Sambath. The children learned many things such as how artificial limbs are made. One of our students was so impressed, that he took a series of photos focussing on the life of a landmine victim.
In January 2010, 12 students came from the Eckerd College Florida to work in our garden. They created a fruit and vegetable patch where the plants grow in boxes filled with good soil. The children have been involved directly from the beginning in tending the garden. We hope to use the produce for our daily meals and are pleased to have the opportunity to educate the children about growing plants and environmental issues in this practical way.
Painting the bathroom walls Thanks to a group of Australian students and teachers who came to us from Maroochydore High School in September 2009, our bathroom area looks now like an aquarium. The children shower and brush their teeth between corals, jellyfish and starfish. We also hung up some reminders for the children about how to brush their teeth.
We are looking forward to having more exhibitions and opportunities to showcase our students' work.
